The Sound of Salzburg and Mike's B-Day

This morning the kids got up bright an early to make birthday cards for Grandpa Mike!!! This is not the only birthday we've celebrated with Mike and Sally on holiday as my 30th was in Dublin two years ago.

That morning we made our way into Salzburg. It was quite a gloomy looking day with threats of rain all day...not so much fun when your plans are to be outside all day. None the less the city is still beautiful...rain or shine.

We didn't go up to the fortress but we did make our way back to the gardens made famous by the movie "Sound of Music." Here we are all standing on the "Do,Re, Mi" stairs and the fountain they all walked around is just behind us.

It started to rain a bit on us so we ducked into the tree tunnel that the VanTrap children ran through during the movie.

We couldn't totally escape the rain as it started to come down heavier and with no sign of stopping. So we found a little cafe inside the "Mozart" building (the place he was born). The boys sat at the bar...

while the girls sat down at the table to color.

Well, until the apple strudel came out and then Harry came down to get a bite.

The rain finally stopped and we made our way up through the aldstadt (old town). We saw some very familiar sites as we relived the moments from our last time here. But we saw some new funny things as well...loved this sausage!

We walk back through the cemetery that was portrayed in the Sound of Music movie where the VanTrap family hid from the Nazis before heading over the mountains on foot. They were still beautiful and haunting as before.

We made our way down Getreidegasse Street for the second time to do some window shopping. My main goal in Salzburg was go to back and get this wooden, hand carved toothpick holder that Kevin and I saw last time but didn't get. Sally has one like it...it's a traditionally looking guy with his mouth wide open...that's where the toothpicks go. It's super cute, but the only store NOT opened on the street (as it was Sunday) was the shop that had my toothpick holder...bummer!

I did get a kick out of one of the souvenier shops that had a lifesized display of Maria and the Van Trap children....woo hoo!! I had hoped to see a few of the other Sound of Music sites that we missed the first time around but with the weather the way it was, it wasn't very condusive for more outdoor activities.

For a very special birthday lunch, we took Grandpa Mike to a very special place...McDonald's!!! But at least it was a McD's in Salzburg, so that had to make it a little more special...right? Well it was a good break for the kids as it had a little play area and Addison scarfed up her food and set forth to building a castle out of the soft blocks.

After lunch we headed back to the cars to make our way back to Munich. It was about a two hour drive, but a beautiful one back through the beautiful fall colors. Since we had two cars, I went along with the boys to return the cars and navigate them home. It took us a while to find the exact entry to bring the cars back to but once we found them, Kevin realized that we hadn't filled them up with fuel. So we asked for directions to the closest place which was a mistake as we didn't understand them very well. Finally we hoped Jane could help us out so we pushed a few buttons to have her bring up the closest petrol stations which took us on a wild goose chase as well. But after about an hour of leaving Grandma with two hungry kids we got the cars filled up and returned, then we hopped on the tram to get back to the hotel.

We made our way down to a really nice restaurant again for that evening but the kids were so out of sorts that it made it pretty difficult to sit and enjoy the meal to much but they had been through quite a bit today so I couldn't blame them too much. We had picked up a bottle of German Reisling at the petrol station so we enjoyed a little night cap in Mike and Sally's room after the kids finally fell asleep in ours...ahhh, but we were finally back in Munich...one of our favorite cities.
